Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use and Disclosure Policy
Purpose
The Journal of Pakistan Prosthodontics Association (JPPA) allows limited use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in manuscript preparation while maintaining transparency, originality, and author accountability.
Definition
AI tools include large language models, chatbots, or automated systems (e.g., ChatGPT or similar software) used for writing, editing, summarizing, data analysis, or figure generation.
Disclosure Requirement
Authors must disclose any use of AI tools at the time of submission in the cover letter and within the manuscript (Acknowledgments or Methods section). Disclosure should include the tool name, version, purpose of use, and the sections affected.
Authorship and Responsibility
AI tools cannot be listed as authors. All authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, interpretation, and integrity of the manuscript, including any AI-assisted content.
Permitted Uses
- Language editing and grammar correction
- Improving clarity and readability
- Formatting assistance under full human supervision
Prohibited Uses
- Generating original scientific content without substantial human input
- Creating or analyzing research data, statistics, or clinical conclusions
- Producing or altering figures, images, or tables without author verification
- Undisclosed use of AI tools
Example Disclosure Statement
“An AI tool (name and version) was used solely for language editing. The authors reviewed and approved all content and take full responsibility for the manuscript.”
Editorial Action
Failure to disclose AI use or misuse of AI tools may result in manuscript rejection, requests for revision, or ethical review in accordance with JPPA policies.
Ethical Alignment
This policy aligns with the principles of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
