Prosthodontics As A Dental Specialty ln Pakistan: Reflections On Its Historical Developments, Achievements And Future Plans
Abstract
The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) was established through an ordinance promulgated on the 19th of May, 1962by the President of Pakistan entrusting it to promote specialist medical practice; arrange postgraduate medical training; conduct examinations; and provide for research. Since then CPSP has not only significantly contributed to the existing medical specialists but also to dental specialist manpower in the country. Various postgraduate clinical dental programs have been designed for membership and fellowship qualifications in the major dental specialties. These training programs have led to producing many oral health and dental specialists and they by working within the country and abroad, have not only made major contributions to the provision of modern dental care services to the public but have also contributed to dental research and education. This article provides a brief history with a main focus on the prosthodontics training programs, the context within which the prosthodontics programs were organized and developed, and a description of some of the many faculty, students (now fellows and distinguished teachers) who have remained associated with these programs. ln November 20t2, the CPSP celebrated its Golden Jubilee to commemorate its 50th anniversary of its existence. Conferences and meetings were held in some of the regional centers in Lahore, lslamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and at the CPSP Headquarters in Karachi during the year 2013. ln these anniversary events, the achievements made through its various programs were highlighted. This article is an update of presentation made by the author in the 20L3 CPSP conference held in Peshawar highlighting the achievement made in the specialty of Prosthodontics as well of the future plans that CPSP might consider for introducing new dental training programs.
